Year 4 have made a great start to the new academic year, including working hard to up-level their writing and developing a strong understanding of place value in 4-digit numbers. They have also enjoyed the start of their 'Creature Features' topic. Our visit to Stibbington yesterday was great, with children dissecting owl pellets, building hedgehog homes and pond dipping. Lots was learned about classification of living things and food chains.

Tuesday is 'Safer Internet Day' and we will be debating the pros and cons of sharing images online. Please can I encourage you all to ask your child about what they discuss at school and ensure that understand the importance of protecting themselves online. In English, we will be writing a discussion text based on what they learn.

The children have already learned the names and properties of different triangles and quadrilaterals this term. They are now moving on to learning more about place value, including in decimal numbers. In English, we will be exploring and writing newspaper recounts over the next 3 weeks, including writing our own Viking newspaper reports. This will fit in nicely with the Viking and Anglo Saxon topic that will be our main focus in the afternoons this term.

Today is the start of a very busy and exciting term in Year 4. Hopefully all the children have been practising their play scripts and songs over the half-term break. We will be starting rehearsals this week.

Next week we have our day visit to Stibbington to explore living things in various different habitats, which will be a great day.

Our topic this half-term is 'On Thin Ice'. We will be exploring states of matter in Science and using Arctic exploration as a stimulus for writing.

We will be continuing to explore place value of 4-digit numbers this week, applying it to our mental calculation strategies as we go. In English the children will be exploring story structure and writing their own story with a dilemma. Our topic of Under the Sea will continue to look at how scientists classify different living things as well as exploring the oceans of the world.

2nd September 2016

After what has hopefully been a restful and fun summer break, our eyes now turn to the start of a new Year as Year 4. Our learning will start with a look at how our reading has progressed over the summer, writing and filming some news reports and considering the impact human's have on the world's ocean ecosystems. Us adults are excited about the skills and understanding we will be passing on this term and can not wait to get started!
