This Week's News

Week ending 21/6/19

This week in Phonics we have revisited ‘ai’ and ‘ee’.

  • ai

Action: Cup one hand over ear as if you can’t hear what someone is saying and say ‘ay’.

Example word: snail, rain, nail, pain, afraid.

  • ee

Action: Put your hands on your head and flap them up and down like the ears of a donkey and say ‘eeyore, eeyore’.

Example words:see, feet, weed, sheep, teeth.

Maths

This week we have been learning about repeated and symmetrical patterns. 

We have learnt what symmetry means: the mirror image – (same on both sides).

International Week

Next week is International week and Reception are going to be learning about Africa.  We will be learning a gumboot dance where the children will be wearing their wellies.  Just a reminder that children will need to bring in wellies in a named carrier bag on Monday 24th June and leave them at school for the whole week ready to practise this dance.

Week ending  14.6.19

As we have learnt all of the Phase 3 phonemes we are revisiting the ones we have learnt so far.  This week we have revisited ‘igh’ and ‘oa’.

  • igh      Action: Put hand to your head to salute and say igh, igh.                                                        Example word: high, light, bright, fight, tight.
  • oa       Action: Bring a hand over your mouth, as if something has gone wrong and say oh!  Example word: toad, oak, road, goat, loaf.

Maths

This week we have been learning about capacity and have also revisited shape. We have practised describing how much is in different containers using the key vocabulary: full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty. We have revised the names of 2D and 3D shapes and talked about their properties:   number of sides and corners in 2D shapes and number of faces on a 3D shape.

International Week

Each year our school has an International week, where we learn about different countries and cultures around the world.  This will be taking place on the week commencing Monday 24th June.  This year each year group are focusing on a different country.  In Reception we have chosen to focus on the continent of Africa.  We will be carrying out lots of exciting activities, including mask making, counting in Swahili and learning about African animals.  We will also be teaching the children a traditional Gumboot dance, which originates from South Africa.  For this dance the children will need to bring in their wellies, as this is what is traditionally worn in the dance.  Please can your child bring in wellies in a named carrier bag on Monday 24th June and leave them at school for the whole week ready to practise this dance.

Week ending 7th June 2019

As we have learnt all of the Phase 3 phonemes we are revisiting the ones we have learnt so far.  This week we have revisited ‘th’ and ‘ng’.

  • Th/th   Example words:that, thin, thick, this.
  • ng  Example words:song, wing, thing, king.

Maths

This week we have been learning about capacity. The children have been filling containers with sand, water and rice to different levels including: full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty.  They have then placed these in order.

Week Ending 24.5.19

This week we have learnt the tricky word ‘like’ as well as learning the following digraph:

  • ure

Ditti: Sure it’s pure.

Example words: sure, pure, cure, secure.

Maths

This week we have been learning about time. The children have been timing each other to complete different activities and talking about the order of their day.

Sports Day:

Just a reminder whole school Sports morning is on Wednesday 5th June. The children will be moving around different activities in their coloured teams. You are able to come and watch your child.

Please make sure they are wearing a t-shirt of their coloured team, shorts and pumps/ trainers. They will need a hat and filled water bottle (water only) and please apply sun cream depending on the weather.

Reception and KS1 races will be on Friday 7th June in the afternoon. Children need to wear the same as Wednesday.

Week Ending: 17.5.19

This week we have learnt the tricky word ‘have’ as well as learning new trigraphs ‘air’ and ‘ear’.

  • air

Example words: hair, fairy, pair, chair, airport.

  • ear

Example words: fear, year, beard, tear

 

Maths

This week we have been learning about sharing and halving. The children have been counting out objects and sharing between different groups.

We have talked about halving and had a go at halving shapes by cutting them.

 

Number of the week

Next week number of the week will be 18. Please share any 18 findings at on home on Tapestry.

 

Suggested activity:

Sharing objects at home – can you share eg fruit between the people in your family or your toys?

Can you cut food in half or quarters?

 

 

 

 

Week ending 10.5.19

This week we have learnt the tricky word ‘all’ as well as learning the new digraph ow

Example words:  owl, cow, now, brown, clown.

Maths

In Maths we have continued to look at doubling numbers.  We have looked at how to double numbers by putting a number in our head and counting-on using our fingers:  e.g. Double 6.  Hold 6 fingers up and count on…..7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.  We have also looked at how to double on a numberline by drawing the correct number of jumps.

 

We have also started to look at sharing and will continue to look at halving and sharing next week.

Our Number of the Week has been 16.  Next week we will be looking at number 17.  Please feel free to share examples of this number on Tapestry.

 

Week ending 3.5.19

This week we have learnt the tricky word ‘are’ as well as learning a new digraph ‘er’.  Action: Roll your hands over each other like a mixer and say er-er-er-er.  Example word: her, flower, boxer, hammer, tower.

Maths

This week we have been learning about doubling. The children have doubled a number by:

  • Counting out 1 set of objects
  • Counting out the same number again
  • Counting them to find the total. 

Warm Weather:

Can we please remind children to bring in the following items each day now the weather is getting hotter:

  • Drinks bottle already filled up
  • A sun hat
  • Please apply suncream before school starts
  • No sunglasses to be worn!

Week ending 26th April 2019

This week we have learnt the tricky word her and the digraph oi.

Action: cup your hands around your mouth and pretend to shout at a passing boat saying Oi! Ship ahoy!

Example word: oil, soil, coin, join, boil.

 

Maths

This week we have revisited 1 more and 1 less and recapped on addition and subtraction.  We have also been looking at number 14.

Next week we are looking at doubling numbers up to 10.

Number of the week next week will be number 15.

 

Week ending 22nd March

This week we have learnt the digraphs or and ur. We have also learnt tricky word They. We have taught them that the tricky part is the ey, as phonetically it should be written using ‘ai’ at the end (thai).

Maths

Next week we are continuing to look at money and the number 13.  

Topic

We will also be learning about Space as part of STEM week.  If you like to find out any facts about Space with your child to bring in to share with the class that would be great, alternatively you could on them on Tapestry for us to read.  If you have any Space themed books at home we would love you to bring them in so we can read them with the class.

Reception Plea!

We are running a little low on kitchen roll tubes, bottles and bottle lids for the junk modelling area, therefore if you have any of these you could bring in for us they would be greatly received.

Week ending 15th March

This week in phonics we have learnt the digraphs oa and ar.  We have been reading and ordering sentences and pictures to re-tell the story of The Three Little Pigs.

In Maths we have been looking at describing, continuing and making our own repeated patterns.  Next week we are looking at money.  Our number of the week next week will be 13. 

On the week beginning 25th March our school is having our STEM week (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).  Reception are going to be making rockets and will be needing cereal boxes for this, so if you have any we could use please send them in from Monday 18th).  Many thanks!

 

Week ending 8th March.

In phonics we have learnt digraphs ee and igh.

All of our story books have disappeared and we have been writing placards and been on a march to get them back.

In Maths we have been exploring 3d shapes, naming them and talking about their properties.

 

Weekending 15th February.

In phonics this week we have been learning to read and write  th digraph.

 

Week ending 25th January

We have been reading We're Going On A Bear Hunt and writing letters to the Bear.

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sound 'x' and 'y'.  They have learnt to read and write words and captions with these letters. We have also learnt tricky words me, we, be. Next week we will be learning the digraphs 'qu' and 'sh' and tricky word was.

In Maths we have been looking at subtraction.

Our number of the week has been number 8. Don't forget to add any examples to tapestry that your child has found at home.

Week ending 30th November 2018

We have been busy practising our Nativity. The children are looking forward to performing it to you next Monday and Tuesday.  

We have been writing our lists to Santa - don't forget to send in a stamp if you haven't already, so we can post them.

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sound 'r' and 'h'.  They have learnt to read and write words and captions with these letters. We have also learnt tricky word into. Next week we will be learning the sound 'u'

In Maths we have been ordering numbers on stockings and counting out decorations onto a Christmas tree to match the number.

Our number of the week has been number 4. Don't forget to add any examples to tapestry that your child has found at home.

Week ending 24th November 2018

This week our puppets Sam and Pip have disappeared! We think it's all down to Evil Pea so we have been making Wanted posters to try and find him. Fingers crossed they come back and are rescued on Superhero day! We're hoping everyone has great fun on Superhero day - making Supertato, Spiderman biscuits and rescuing the veggies. 

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sound 'e'.  They have learnt to read and write words and captions with these letters. We have also learnt tricky words I, no, go. Next week we will be learning the sounds 'h' and 'r', and tricky word into.

In Maths we have been recognising numbers and representing them through cutting shapes aswell as ordering numbers to make a jigsaw of the Superheroes.  

Our number of the week has been number 3, next week we will look at number 4. Please add on to tapestry any ways your child has seen r represented number 4.

We have been very busy starting to practice our Nativity play which we will be performing on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th December in the afternoon.

Week ending 16th November 2018

This week the children have enjoyed making superhero themed box models as well as making rhyming ladders for Supertato to try to help the veggies.  

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sounds 'c' and 'k'.  They have learnt to read and write words and captions with these letters.  Next week we will be learning the sound 'e', and tricky words I, no and go.

In Maths we have been representing numbers in different ways.  Next week we will be recapping number recognition, ordering and representing numbers.

Our number of the week has been number 3 and this will continue next week.

Next Thursday (22nd November) will be our superhero day where we ask the children to come in dressed as a superhero.  Can you please make sure that your child brings in a potato on Monday ready for our Supertato activity.  Many thanks!

Week ending 9th November 2018

 The children have continued to enjoy exploring our topic 'Superheroes'.  We have been making maps to help Supertato find Evil Pea.

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sounds 'g' and 'o'.  They have learnt to read and write words with these letters.  Next week we will be learning the sounds 'c', 'k' and tricky word to.

In Maths we have been ordering numbers to 20.  Next week we will be looking at how numbers can be represented in different ways and the language of more and fewer.

Our number of the week has been number 2.  We have been exploring the number in lots of different ways.  Next week our focus number is number 3.

Week ending 2nd November 2018

Welcome back to school after our half term break, we hope you all had a good week.  The children have been working hard this week and have enjoyed exploring our new topic 'Superheroes'.  We have read Supertato and are looking out for Evil Pea.

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sounds 'm and 'd'.  They have learnt to read and write words with these letters in as well as learning the tricky word 'the'.  Next week we will be learning the sounds 'o' and 'g'.

In Maths we have looked at recognising numbers to 20 and matching them to corresponding objects.  Next week we will continue to look at recognising numbers to 20 as well as ordering numbers.

We have also started our number of the week this week and have been focusing on number 1.   Each week the children will focus on learning a new number.  We will explore the number in lots of different ways.  We will learn where it comes on a numberline, look at numbers that are more and fewer than it and will show it in lots of different ways (on a dice, with a cube, with numicon, on our fingers, numbers of sides and corners on a shape).  Next week our focus number is number 2.  

Our whole school sponsored reading afternoon to raise money for our new library will take place next Monday (5th November 2018).  Can you please return any sponsor forms to us on Monday so we can sign off the challenges that they do.  Many thanks!

Week ending 12th October 2018

This week has been an exciting week for the children with the wedding of Rosie and Billy the puppets.  The children enjoyed taking part in the service at the church with Reverend Sue.  They took on the roles of bridesmaids, best man, father of the bride as well as carrying Billy and Rosie.  It was a lovely service and the children all did a great job.  Thank you to all the parents who came along with us to help on the walk to the church.    

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sounds 't' and 'p'.  They have learnt the Jolly Phonic's songs and action as well as the handwriting rhyme.  Next week we will be learning the sounds 'i' and 'n'.

In Maths we have continued to look at counting to 20 and we will continue to work on this next week.  We will also be looking at estimating and the language of more and fewer.

Week ending 5th October 2018

The children have have had another good week at school.  They have started to look at weddings in preparation for our class puppet's wedding at the church next week (Wednesday 10th October).  Thank you to all those parents who have offered to walk down to the church with us.  If you haven't let us know and would like to help then please speak to your child's class teacher. 

In Phonics the children have been learning to read and write the sounds 's' and 'a'.  They have learnt the Jolly Phonic's songs and action as well as the handwriting rhyme.  The children should have brought home the handwriting sheet (on Friday) so you can practise the letters with them.  Next week we will be learning the sounds 't' and 'p'.

In Maths we have been looking at counting to 20 and we will continue to work on this next week.    

Just a reminder that our Harvest assembly is next Friday 12th October at 2.30pm.  You are invited to come and join us to hear the songs that we have been practising.

28th September 2018

The children have had a great week at school, getting to know each other and settling into our new routines.  We have been busy carrying out their baseline assessments in all the areas of our curriculum.

In Phonics we have been using our voices to make different sounds and Fred the Frog has been sounding out words for us to guess.

We have started to practice some songs for our Harvest assembly on Friday 12th October at 2.30pm, we hope you can come and join us.

Next week will be introducing s and a in Phonics and in Maths we will be counting.
