After a safe arrival and tour the children and staff got stuck into the activities: sailing, archery, high low ropes courses and bushcraft.

Lunch was fab and all looking forward to our evening meal.

Snow Clearing Sunday 5th February 2012

Essential footpaths have been cleared onto the school site today Sunday 5th February 2012. I was delighted to have fantastic help form Mr McGhie (and a digger), Mr Hope, Ella, Daniel and Isabelle W(middle daughter).

Please note, the KS2 playground access will not be used tomorrow Monday 6th February (until a pathway can be cleared).

All parents/carers and pupils will need to use the slope path and across the KS1 playground. Access to School's Out has been cleared.

Year 3F Stibbbington Residential Day 2

The children awoke this morning to a breakfast of sausages and hoops. This was swiftly followed by a lesson on Rocks and Soils and then a mini-bus trip to Old Sulehay woods to search for fossils in the limestone. The fossil hunt was very successful with every child finding one or more. Lunch included pizza and ham sandwiches. After lunch the children took part in rock permiability testing, a visit to the Time Tunnel and made oolitic cakes. The children are currently dancing the night away to a disco and it will soon be shower then bedtime.

Year 3F Stibbington Residential

Year 3F arrived safely in Stibbington and after an introduction to the centre, the children located their bedrooms and unpacked. After fire drill, the children participated in an eco trail around the grounds and just before lunch, the centre eco flag was raised. At twelve o'clock lunch was served in the Crunchy Carrot Cafe. The children enjoyed egg, tuna and cheese sandwiches and carrot sticks followed by a choice of fruit and biscuits. The afternoon was spent in the local nature reserve, reading maps and using a compass following a treasure trail. Callum managed to find the treasure hidden by the pirates. A fun day was had by all and we are all looking forward to dinner at 5pm. More photos can be found in the Gallery. We hope you enjoy them.

Jeans 4 Genes/Macmillan Cancer Care Fund Raising

As a result of wearing jeans, coffee morning and harvest produce donation we have raised a tremendous £277 (£189 for Jeans4Genes and £88 for the Macmillan cancer care charity).

The children have returned to school happy and eager to learn which is wonderful to see. A warm welcome to our new children and families.

Regrettably as the first race was getting ready for the off - the heavens opened and the rumble of thunder heard nearby.

We are planning to re-schedule next week when we can see the most appropriate weather window.

I have excellent news to tell you, our Great Wall of Werrington has come first place in the China Art Project. All entries from the Peterborough Cluster of schools were fantastic but they were very impressed with the fact that our Werrington Wall was a whole school project, beautifully designed and extremely colourful. Our work will be on display in September in London or Manchester alongside our Chinese partner school's work. A massive congratulations to all the children and staff involved in creating the incredible art work. I am very delighted and proud we have won! Watch this space for more news on the project.

CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011-ROUND 1

We have had several tense matches throughout the last two weeks.

The longest going match was Myles 6E vs Deron 4S which went on for four days!!

Harrison 4S showed real determination when against Connor 3W and was victorious.

The chess matches start at 12:30 every lunch time and is in the library.

After an exciting first day, the children enjoyed a meal of lasagne, salad, potato wedges and peas followed by a choice of desserts. Once dinner was eaten, we were straight out again problem solving until 8.30pm. Everyone then enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate before heading off to bed!

This morning the children awoke early, full of anticipation, and after a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, spaghetti hoops and sausages the activitities began.

WPS Parent/Carer Numeracy Support Workshop

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to share with you further information regarding the Parent/Carer Information Workshops planned for this term. The questionnaire we sent out in November gave us a good steer towards the areas you typically find most difficult in supporting your child’s numeracy and literacy at home. In an attempt to start addressing some of the issues raised in the questionnaires we have planned our first workshop on a numeracy theme.

We have rearranged the Staff Continuing Professional Development timetable to enable a Parent/Carer after school workshop on Monday 7^th February 4.00pm to 5.30pm. We considered many options regarding the date and timing of this and whilst on this occasion it may not be the most ideal for you, we hope that many of you will be able to join us. The structure and content of the workshops are aimed directly at a Parent/Carer audience – we kindly ask that children do not attend on this occasion. We hope that this will allow you to access and engage fully within the workshops. If you cannot attend this particular event, all of the materials used during the afternoon will be posted on the school website (www.werringtonprimaryschool.co.uk) including video and tutorials demonstrating the calculation methods.

On this occasion the focus will be on the DfE Numeracy Strategy - calculation methods we promote in school. The staff have planned a range of demonstration activities which are designed to showcase the calculation methods used in their year group. Please see the workshops below for each year group. You may have children in different year groups and we have built in a transition element allowing you to benefit from two year group’s workshops. This is a great opportunity for you to experience at first hand the calculation methods taught in school. There are two additional workshops: Mrs Threadgill will be running a Challenge workshop looking at how you can extend maths challenges and Teaching Assistant’s who directly support our Wave 2 (Springboard) and Wave 3 interventions sharing this approach to supporting children with numeracy IEP’s (Individual Education Plans).

Please don’t panic! Whilst we hope you will join in, we will not bombard you with on the spot Tables Tests and pages of sums.

Free School Meals Entitlement

Dear Parents/Carers,

Free School Meals

One of the measures the Department for Education use to determine each schools allocation of funds/budget is the number of pupils in receipt of free school meals. Free School Meals trigger additional funding for school! I would like to encourage all parents whose children are entitled to a free school meal to ensure they apply as soon as possible. This applies even where the entitlement is not taken up.

Application forms are available from the school office and any applications are treated in the strictest confidence. If you are unsure whether you are entitled please speak to the school office who will be able to advise you accordingly. As a general rule any parent in receipt of income support, income based job seekers allowance, income related employment and support allowance, child tax credit (provided you do not also receive working tax credit), the guarantee credit element of state pension credit and support under part 6 of the immigration and asylum act 1999 are entitled to free school meals for their children.

Happy Christmas everyone or Bon Natale.

As I write this update the temperature outside is -12 degrees celsius with a wind chill of -23 degrees celsius and the snow lays thick and crisp. Whilst I am not in the Peterborough area at the moment I understand things have been very cold. Unfortunately we have suffered a burst pipe in the school mobile! I hope you are all keeping safe and warm.

Just in case you were wondering School is open today.

FYI - I have travelled in from Lincolnshire and the main roads are OK. It seems that the village and minor roads are less treated with salt so take it easy folks!

School is lovely and warm and ready to go for another great day. The KS1 and KS2 entrance route will be used today across the playground.

As I write this posting it is snowing quite heavily again. Please do refer to the Winter Weather guidance within the newsletter sent out today.

Before ringing the school to find out whether we are open/closed please ask yourself:

1. Have I checked the school website for updated information? We endeavour to update the website regularly and if a decision to close school is made it will posted there.

2. Have I checked my mobile phone text messages from ParentMail? We will send a text message to the registered mobile number/s.

3.Have I checked my email messages? We will send an email alert via Parent-Mail.

4. Have I listened in to Heart FM radio? They broadcast school closures very regularly and Headteacher's ring directly into the station with a closure announcement.

The phone line into school is likely to be very clogged up and staff will be very busy attempting to open the school so please help us and check the sources above before you ring in.

3W Stibbington Adventure

Class 3W have arrived safely at the Stibbington Centre and I am delighted to report in good spirits despite the wet weather.

This morning we enjoyed map reading in the grounds of the centre and the children learnt that tucking your trousers into your boots was a good idea!

After a super filling lunch we prepared for a Treasure Adventure using our map reading skills. With our coats, hats, gloves and warm clothes on we set out into the rain once again without a moments hesitation. The children enjoyed puddle dodging and found the treasure - yee ha! Luckily the pirates didn't see us (they certainly could hear us)!

We are now back at the centre looking forward to a great evening ahead.

PARENTS COFFEE MORNING

This session gives parents the opportunity and venue to get together for a coffee and a chat and speak to parents who have previously completed the parenting programme. It also offers the chance for you to meet the adults providing the childcare for those attending the next programme.
